Warum ich mich mit einem Brokkoli identifiziere?

Er ist gesund und schaut interessant aus. Er ist nicht etwas für jeden, aber richtig eingesetzt – sehr sexy. Außerdem ist er schön grün.

Sie identifizieren sich mit einem Kürbis, oder Kalebasse?

Ja, mit Kürbis allgemein. Weil die Pflanze als solches, die ist sehr wüchsig, sie bildet  Ranken; die meisten Kürbisse, nicht alle, aber die meisten. Und ich finde, ich beobachte gerne wie die von Tag zu Tag wieder ein Stück gewachsen ist und diese Triebspitzen sehen immer aus als ob sie etwas suchen, einen Halt, wo sie hochwachsen können. Das hat fast was von einem Tier, auch die Geschwindigkeit des Wachstums. So was fasziniert mich einfach. Und natürlich, die Früchte schmecken einfach sehr gut, das ist klar, und es gibt eine unglaubliche Sortenvielfalt. Von Hokkaido, über Sweet Dumpling, Muskat und noch ganz viel andere Sorten. Also sehr sehr kreative Pflanze, in der Form und ihrer Früchte. Auch sehr farbenfroh die verschiedenen Früchte. Und ja, man kann wirklich jeden Tag eine Veränderung sehen. Das gefällt mir einfach. (Lachen)

Gibt es ein Lieblingsrezept?

Am liebsten ess ich den so aufm Backblech, überbacken, mit ein bisschen Öl beträufelt und Kräutern drauf und vielleicht ein paar Tomatenscheiben dazwischen damit es saftiger wird. Und man kann manche, die kleineren, kann man auch schön füllen. Wenn man die erst so ein bisschen aushöhlt und dann das Fruchtfleisch mit etwas Leckerem mischt und wieder rein tut, am Blech dann.

Why do you identify with a cactus fruit?

Well, first off, because we are both desert creatures. Well, plants. Aaaand because … both of us respond well to opportunity. The cactus only flowers and fruits when there is the water for it and then it does it very very quickly to take advantage of the opportunity. And I´m also good at …taking opportunities to …basically when I get the resources to do what I need to do I try very hard to use that moment instead of counting on always having resources. And, also, because like they look friendly and approachable from the outside. You know, they are lovely and they have got this taut skin and they are red but then you touch them, then they are covered with these hair like spines that work their way under your skin. So you have to be very careful with them. And – they take a lot of work because this pulp, they have these inedible seeds and everything that´s useful is kind of around them. So it takes a whole lot of work to get anything pleasant or useful out of them. And I think that´s a good metaphor for me.

But it´s a good fruit, once you make it to the edible part…

Yeah, then you learn how to handle them and learn what to do with them. Take the time and yes it´s worthwhile. But if you just want something fast, and easy and pleasant – it´s not me (laughter).

Jodie gave me the opportunity getting beyond the pulp and seeds on a pleasant walk close to Arizona State University where she did part of her research within the “Educating Future Change Agents” project ( http://educatingchangeagents.org ).

I identify with a reversed coconut because I´m white but I feel kind of black in ways I identify; and culture things, and values and the society and stuff. But also hard because the nut is hard to crack. It is hard to know the real deal because it has always been adaptive. From like a lot of different people, colors, nationalities, beliefs. … The juice, it´s sweet and very nourishing. The meat doesn´t have any flavor but the consistency it´s like…. I don´t know! …. It´s also kind of used for sweet or salty. …You can also cook the cassava with coconut milk – it´s a base. The water can turn something very hard into something soft. … You really got me thinking! (laughter)

How do you prefer to eat them?

Like raw, as they are. You drink it. You crack it … drink and eat it.
